“I don’t know where my money is going.”
It’s one of the most common things I hear from new clients. And it’s one of the most solvable. Here’s what the first 30 days of working together actually looks like.
Week 1: Discovery
We start by building a complete picture of the current state. Not the financial statements — those come later. We want to understand how the business actually operates: how money comes in, how it goes out, what systems exist (or don’t), where the records are and what condition they’re in.
This week we’re asking questions, gathering access, and diagnosing the gap between where the financial records are and where they need to be. We’re also identifying the biggest risks — the things that could cause a problem if not addressed quickly.
Week 2: Cleanup Begins
We start with the most recent period and work backward. Transactions get categorized. Accounts get reconciled. The financial records start taking on a shape that actually reflects the business.
This is often where the surprises emerge. Expenses that were assumed to be one category turn out to be another. Revenue that was thought to be collected turns out to be in receivables. Costs that seemed like one-time items turn out to be recurring. The first clear picture of the business starts forming — and it’s almost never exactly what the owner expected.
Week 3: The Financial Picture Emerges
By now, the recent records are clean. We can produce a real P&L, a real balance sheet, and a real cash flow statement. For many clients, this is the first time they’ve seen accurate financial statements for their own business.
This is also when we start building the cash flow forecast — a forward-looking view of inflows and outflows over the next 60 to 90 days. Often the first one shows a gap the owner didn’t know was coming.
Week 4: The First Moment of Clarity
By the end of the month, the client has something they didn’t have before: a clear, honest financial picture. They know what they’re earning, what they’re spending, what their margins actually are, and what’s coming financially over the next two to three months.
The relief is almost always palpable. Not because the picture is perfect — it usually isn’t. But because they can finally see clearly enough to make real decisions. And that changes everything.
